That was my first time being with a man because I chose to. Wasn’t out of love, though, like married folks are supposed to do. It was more like out of control. That’s all it was right there in that bedroom that late evening. Control. Lord forgives me now. Yes He does…because I didn’t know. Back then, I wasn’t sure where right was gonna take me and if wrong was gonna break me, so I felt like I had to. Mostly because that’s how you control. At least that’s what I knew. Control with your body. Either you do the controlling or some man’ll do it to you…and his way hurts. Learn to hate a man when he does it, and learn to make him love you when you do it. But, yeah, it was my first time in control, so I just knew I was gonna win. And soon…he was gonna be in love with me enough so we can do it like married folks because we’ll be married and no other man’ll touch me then. I’ll be protected. Like my momma was. No man set eyes on her, and back then I thought it was because she was married. Now I figure they probably didn’t look at her in her face on a count of they see me in her and it makes their necks hang low. But, yeah, that’s as far as my young mind could take me back then…up the road to another man with hopes for my love. I should’ve known better, but that was my young mind.
